Character:  In addition to the biblical character descriptions of I Timothy and Acts, a New City East Side leader must be:

  • Maintain moral and ethical decorum - Our commitment to biblical morality and ethics is a necessary component for any Christian leader, especially for those who lead in worship.

  • Able to take direction and criticism.  We all fail and make mistakes.  Direction and criticism are given for the good and growth of the staff member and for the good and growth of the church.

  • Able to laugh at themselves and have a healthy sense of humor.  This is critical to our staff.  We love to laugh at life and laugh with (and sometimes AT) one another.

  • A self-starter.  The Worship Leader must be able to manage time and resources independently and responsibly.  He or she is expected to set and execute agreed-upon ministry goals.

  • Persistently pursue spiritual and personal growth. It is most important that the worship leader is growing spiritually in such a way that he or she can influence those whom he or she is leading, as well as the congregation.

  • A uniter of people.  Unity in the church and on a worship team is critical for worship.  Because we are all flawed people, disagreements may occur from time to time. It’s important that the worship leader seeks to unite for the good testimony of Jesus.

Chemistry:  It is very hard to quantify chemistry, but it is a non-negotiable. By Chemistry, we mean a person’s personality and interactions with others - for example, likeable, friendly, easy to talk with, a good listener, someone others would trust and follow.

Chemistry is often most recognizable by its absence: when you dread seeing someone, cannot imagine sharing a meal together in your home, or would never want to be stuck in a car with them on a 10-hour drive.  When you are afraid to disagree with them or constantly feel judged by them.  When you don’t trust them to keep confidence or deal with you fairly.  When you avoid speaking to them at the staff Christmas party.  You get the point.  Lack of chemistry will kill a healthy staff and team dynamic.

Competence:  A Worship Leader candidate should possess at a minimum the following skills, knowledge, qualifications, or capacities:

  • The ability to develop systems and structures that promote a good worship environment.  The Worship Leader will work with the elders and staff of New City East Side to develop systems and structures within the worship ministry that lead us toward the accomplishment of our mission and vision.

  • Able and willing to equip, educate, and empower volunteers to grow in their understanding of worship and their abilities to do the same..

  • A highly administrative self-starter with the ability to prioritize tasks.

  • Relates well to all kinds of people by listening, learning, negotiating, and educating. Builds effective relationships with partners and volunteers.

  • Possesses excellent written and oral communication skills.
